In ancient China, there is a tradition of planting willows to plant trees on Tomb-Sweeping Day. In history, the first roadside tree planting was initiated by Wei Xiaokuan from Shaanxi Province more than 1,400 years ago. Because of this, Ling Daoyang, Han An, Pei Yili and other forestry experts in 1915 first proposed the establishment of Chinese Arbor Day, set the time in the Qingming Festival. In 1928, the national government to commemorate the third anniversary of the death of Sun Yat-sen will be changed to March 12 Arbor Day. After the founding of New China in 1979, under the proposal of Deng Xiaoping, the Sixth Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress decided that the annual March 12 as Arbor Day. July 1, 2020, the implementation of the newly revised "Forest Law of the People's Republic of China", clear every year on March 12 as Arbor Day.

Since 1981, China began to carry out the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign. Statistics show that more than 10.4 billion people have planted trees on a voluntary basis, totaling 49.2 billion. The nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign has vigorously promoted the improvement of China's ecological situation. After years of unremitting efforts, China has realized the sustained growth of its forest resources despite the decreasing of the world's forest resources. The improvement of forest vegetation not only beautifies the homeland, reduces the damage of soil erosion and sandstorm to farmland, but also effectively improves the carbon storage capacity of forest ecosystem.
